- Describe a foreign country(culture) you want to know more about You should say:
- What it is
- Where it is
- How you know it
- And explain why you want to know more about it
I’d like to talk about Singapore, a tiny country, which states on the Malay peninsula. Singapore has a lot in common with the West while maintaining its distinctly Asian roots. This most important is that English and Mandarin is widely spoken in Singapore. Signs, menus, subway schedules, all printed in English. We’ll always find someone who speaks it.
Singapore is a sovereign island nation located just off the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia in Southeast Asia. It’s 85 miles north of the equator and enjoys a tropical rainforest climate. Temperatures stay consistently hot throughout the year. Singapore is a highly developed nation with one of the world’s strongest economies.
I planned to travel to Singapore with my best friend for her graduation trip in last winter holiday. While the 2019-nCoV held us back, we have to delay our travel plan.
As for why I want to know more about Singapore, I heard that Singapore is foodie heaven, where I could find familiar Asian foods in the city’s famous hawker markets and western food is widely available as well. My friend and I cannot wait to taste Singapore food, for example, Black Pepper Crab, Bak Kut Teh and Satay. Besides, according to tourists’ handbook, when travelling in Singapore, not just the high rise buildings but we could get a glimpse into the culture and traditions with beautiful markets and even a wide range of national parks and wildlife spotting around which is an added bonus.
Part 3
1.What do you think is the best way to learn foreign culture?
I think the best way to try and know a foreign culture is to try new food. The world is, and endless cookbook and every country offer a different recipe. Whether you’re tackling a recipe yourself or dining out at a restaurant, sampling a country’s native cuisine is a wonderful way to experience the culture.
2.What do you think is the biggest problem to work in a foreign country?
Language barriers should be the biggest problem to work abroad. Even if you are an excellent speaker, if you are working in a country where you are not a native speaker, there will be a large language barrier. Even if you are a native speaker, you will have to get used to the slang and idioms used in your new home country. This can potentially make even the most routine events hard and stressful for you.
3.Some people say that reading is the best way to know about a culture, do you agree?
It’s hard to say. Even if you hear or read something about a certain culture, it’s important to realise that this doesn’t mean everyone from that particular background believes the same thing. I believe one of the best ways to experience and understand another culture is actually to live among them. It might take a while to save for, but planning a trip overseas to a country you’re interested in can be the best way of opening yourself up to new cultures.
