Describe a historical building you have been to. You should say:
- Where it is;
- What it looks like
- What you learned there
- And how you felt about this historical building
The historical building that I would like to talk about is a traditional courtyard in Beijing, which is located in the south of Beijing. It’s also called Siheyuan.
For those who don’t know, a siheyuan is a historical type of residence that was commonly found throughout China, most famously in Beijing and rural Shanxi. It’s also the product of 3000 years of accumulated cultural wisdom and building practices. The Siheyuan I visited is situated in the north and faces south, and has its main gate in the comer of the courtyard with a screen wall inside, maintaining the privacy of the residence. The courtyard is square, vast and of a suitable size. It contains flowers and is set up with rocks, providing an ideal space for outdoor living.
In the past, the head of the family would reside in the main house which is positioned to the North. Mini bridges or halls connect the four buildings. The rooms of the building adjoining the main house are referred to as the “side houses” and were the living quarters of the younger generations or less important members of the family.
When I entered the building, I particularly adored the roof, the big wooden gate, and the traditional Chinese ornaments .Its red gates made me warm. In addition, since Siheyuan is a mirror of Chinese culture, reflecting the sense of belongs in the mind of Chinese people, I strongly suggest that government should have laws and regulations on the protection of it.
